Third in his ever-ongoing series of exploratory EPs, "Escape & Evasion" finds Toledo, OH's Ellul pushing limits in the humblest tones possible. Through an over-arching series of mellow mid-tempo passages, he continues to expand his palette of thick jazzy chords, single-note layers that contrast melodic vs. dissonant moods, and cloudy ambient open strums. While more subdued and somber than his last release, Communiqué, E&E continues to cover new ground on its own meditative terms.
Ellul's recent influences are all over the map: Mylets, The Dodos, La Dispute, Floral, Alarmist, Houdan the Mystic, Owls, Chon, Three Trapped Tigers, King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Tears for Fears, The Cure, The Smiths, Baths, Actress, The Books, Flying Lotus, Teebs, Thundercat, Herbie Hancock, Phillip Glass, Steve Reich, Cali Agents, Camp Lo, Nas, Jungle Brothers, Buffalo Springfield, Television, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Captain Beefheart, and more...
His recent non-musical influences include Black Mirror (tv series), Black & Green Review (anarcho-primitivist // green anarchist magazine), Comedy Bang Bang (podcast), and "the delicious food in Boston."
